Girardi Satin Tights

Girardi Satin Tights is supreme!

We loved the very first pair of Girardi tights we saw; their Chic Tulle style is a delight. It was mixed feelings when this pair arrived for review. Elation at a second Girardi style to review. But, we were tinged with disappointment that is was a 70 denier style in the English Spring. But of course, we could rely on the English weather to allow us to try them; cold wet and grey.

At a shade under £23, you would expect tights with quality detailing, and quality detailing is what you get. The legs are lightly shaped at the heel and finished with an un-reinforced toe with a flat soft seam. In the panty, you have flat seams and no reinforcement other than a very narrow transition to the waistband. Our test pair came in size 4 and rather than the expected cotton lined gusset we found a comfort gusset (V-shaped rear panel).

There are five sizes to choose from according to the size chart each offering a little extra height and weight over the size below until you get to size five which caters for the same maximum height as size 4. We must assume that sizes 4 and 5 are similar to size 5 having a bigger gusset. According to the size chart, the maximum height and weight for size 4 are 5’10” and 180lb. A quick look at the metric limits and we see 185cm, and 85 kg and the sharp-eyed will have spotted that that equates to a maximum height of 6’1”.

The sizing is quite generous with enough length to fit a leggy 6’1” and plenty of width in the panty. The sizing of size 4 is generous enough to cover the suggested range for size five too. Assuming the generosity of sizing goes down through the sizes, we would look to go to size 3 to get a proper cotton gusset if we were even close to the size boundary.

Sheer to waist opaque tights look way better than those with a reinforced panty, and these do look superb — great opacity without looking bulky. Perfectly even colour throughout and a delicate satin sheen to the finish to make them as suitable for the evening as the office.

Not cheap tights but this are premium pantyhose, and the mid-market brands are not far behind these days. You are getting what you pay for, comfort and class plus a bit of insulation.

Girardi Chic Tulle Tights

Girardi Chic Tulle Tights are super comfy!

We are perhaps overdue in reviewing tights from Girardi seeing as they have been making hosiery in Italy since 1954! But better late than never as they say.

The packet notes don’t tell us much about the tights so we have no idea what to expect other than a hint from the denier and the word tulle in the name that these may be some great net tights. We love uncertainty.

The hints were accurate; these are indeed fantastic net tights. Think net curtain or bridal veil, certainly not fishnet.

Detailing is excellent, sandal toe, shaped legs and sheer to waist — flat seams in the panty and a broad plain waistband.

There are five sizes to choose from, and our test pair came in size 4. Sizes 4 and five both fitting to the same height. The maximum height is quoted as 185cm or 5’10”. Anyone quick at maths will have worked out that these are not the same; 185cm being 6’1” and 5’10” being 178cm. As cotton is mentioned in the fibre content we had expected size 4 to have a cotton gusset but surprisingly it has a comfort gusset, and we must assume size 5 has a bigger version of the same.

Combine a net tight with 13% Lycra, and you should get plenty of stretches, and you do so, in fact, both height figures are wrong, these tights will fit a leggy 6’2” (188cm). The weight side of the sizing is generous too so if you prefer a cotton gusset and the size chart suggests size 4 for you then a size three should fit.

The fit is excellent, and the comfort gusset is one of the better ones we have tried. These are very comfortable tights and the more open nature of the knit means they should keep you cooler in warm weather. The thick waistband is a delight, soft, comfortable and practical.

The tulle knit produces a perfectly even colour and a matte finish. From more than a couple of paces away these tights look entirely sheer, and from a few paces more you have an almost bare leg look.

These are the first tight we have seen from Girardi, but we hope they are not the last. Top quality!

Gipsy Pinstripe Flower Tights

Gipsy Pinstripe Flower Tights are super classy!

The packet design allows you to see pretty much what you are getting, so few surprises are opening the packet. Only when you open these tights out, do you see the flat seams and shaped heels that reveal the quality.

The material is soft in hand and has the appearance of something like 15 denier.

The high leg brief has a beautiful lacy border, and the pinstripe motif of the legs is mirrored in the body design. The waistband is finished with a scalloped edge, less classy than the similar offerings from Fogal and Gerbe but a great detail at this price.

Leg length looks pretty good; this is confirmed when you put them on, quite long enough for the longest legs. Good length in the body ensures the waistband sits correctly.

Comfortable tights that fit very well and give a smooth, soft finish between the stripes.

The description on the Gipsy website and the packet don’t adequately describe the design. These are tights with a pinstripe design from the reinforced toe to a “garter” band near the top of the thigh, quite a broad pinstripe with just seven verticals around the leg. On the outside of each leg is a geometric floral pattern that runs up the leg between two of the pinstripes. Above the “garter” is sheer material that goes up to the panty. You would never mistake the design for the real hold up stockings. But these are classy, sexy tights that look good in their own right.

You could wear the ivory colour we tested for a wedding. This is the only colour still available, a pity as they look good in black on our shopping website.

Gipsy 40 Denier Colour Opaque Tights

Gipsy 40 Denier Colour Opaque Tights are the new standard for affordable tights!

As is typical with the Gipsy tights supplied in open packets there are no packet notes. Just two stickers on a generic packaging giving the denier, style name and colour. There is also a size chart suggesting that “one size” is anything from 5’0” to 5’10” (152-178cm) and hip size 34”-42” (86-107cm).

You can feel the soft material and see the colour if you are buying these tights in the high streets. But they are packaged in such a way that you cannot see how they are constructed. It is no great surprise to find that these low priced & fashion conscious tights are made to the most simple of designs. Straight legs, no reinforced toe, no gusset, raised seams in the panty and a dull “turn over and stitch” waistband.

The focus here has been very much on producing a bright colour to work with one outfit. That said the colour range does include black for everyday wear and white.

As for wearing them. Well first off these tights are way too strong to write off after just one wearing, it is strength and stretch in abundance. The stretch means you can go beyond the suggested maximum height if your legs are no longer than 34” and slim to average, but don’t take liberties with the hip sizing as the panty is not generous.

Fit on the legs is good with no sagging or bagging at the knee of the ankle. The colour of the soft matte finish is perfectly even.

The lack of gusset and the raised seams do slightly compromise fit and comfort. But this is a design that fulfils its requirements perfectly, eye-catching style at a budget price. It is easy to see why it is one of the top-selling styles of the season.

Gipsy 100 Denier Colour Opaque Tights

Gipsy 100 Denier Colour Opaque Tights are a staple product you need!

We don’t usually comment on the colour of the tights that we review. Focusing instead on quality, sizing, fit and value for money. But, in this case, we feel justified because the colour is an integral part of what these tights offer. And, because our ruby sample is just the most delicious deep shade of red! These tights are eighteen colours, including black.

On a more practical note these tights are also made in three sizes, the Small and Medium covering the same range of heights and weights that the one size of the Gipsy 40 Denier Colour Opaque Tights that we looked at recently, the Large size providing for larger hips. Three sizes are always better than one, and the extra size in the panty of the large size is welcome as that limitation was our only reservation on the 40 denier version.

The construction and detailing of these tights is straightforward, straight tube legs, normal weight and finish from hip to toe, raised seamed in the panty and a simple waistband; the good news is that unlike the 40 denier this style has a lined gusset.

Sizing is accurate with enough stretch and strength to cope if you are taller, right up to a 36” leg. The fit is excellent with remarkably little bunching behind the knee for such heavy tights. Colour is perfectly even, and there is a slight sheen on the finish.

The only improvement we could suggest would be flat seams, but that is being picky particularly given the reasonable price.

The cost of these tights may be one thing that will hurt you. Even as basic black tights they are worth buying for their fit and quality. You will probably need to buy all 18 colours! Of course, if you look at it another way; you could have warm, stylish winter hosiery in every colour you need to match your outfit and mood from now until spring for just about £6 a day!

Gerbe Sun Satin 10 Tights

Gerbe Sun Satin 10 Tights are fantastic!

(We have also included other Gerbe Sun Satin images in the post, so we hope you like them!)

Even on the card, these tights look of high quality. Soft and smooth to the touch with a fully shaped heel, flat seams and a silk gusset.

The detailing is interesting as the larger sizes have two seams at the rear with the silk gusset being V-shaped. The rear panel is of a heavier yarn. The waistband is elasticated, more like knickers than tights, and has the Gerbe name repeated around it. Rollover is not an issue with this design.

Gerbe_Collant_Sun_Satin_10aSimply heaven to put on, even though there is 12% Lycra it hardly seems to be required, the material slides up the legs and fits. The feel on the legs is soft and super sheer. The matt finish and sandal toe, to make them almost invisible. Expensive tights. But great value if you want that barely there look and feel.

Packet notes say that the back panel includes silk in the yarn. Marked down from their regular price of £12.50 to just £6.25 anyone wanting the perfect tights for the summer should buy whatever they have in their size. Packet notes say that the back panel includes silk in the yarn.

As you can see from the three different packet designs and the change in fibre mix Gerbe reinvent this style for each new season. The good news is that this means you can buy at the season end and get a real bargain. Every incarnation has been a delight. Our favourite in the Sun Satin range, but you should try them all! Whether many stores will keep all the range is debatable, but you can always buy direct.

Gerbe Soie 50 Tights

Gerbe Soie 50 Tights really missed the mark this time.

No, you did not misread the fibre mix, these are 100% silk tights. Gerbe makes these tights in just four sizes; 1-4.

As soon as you open the packet you can see these tights are different; the whole surface texture is just different. The second thing that you notice when you open them out is that they look huge, in fact, size four measure 70” or 178cm from waistband to the tip of the toe.

The regular Gerbe waistband is replaced with a knitted weld that looks more like something from a cheaper brand, whereas the brief is finished with flat seams and a reinforced gusset.

Sheer to the waist in construction with the shaping of the legs at the heel and invisibly Reinforced toes.

When you put these tights on all that length disappears into the width needed to get around your leg. There is no stretch to speak of although we can report that the sizing is accurate. We must stress that you must not stray outside of the size chart guidelines.

The finish on these 50 denier tights is matt, so you don’t get the sort of glossy finish you may imagine.

Now, silk is a natural material so you would expect more variation in fibre than with man-made Nylon, but sadly we have to report that on the leg our black test pair looked like cheap semi-opaque nylon tights. If you are going to try these tights, the pale colour will be the one to go for.

Despite doubting that tights could be made of silk we have wanted to try these ever since we heard of them. After much anticipation, it is disappointing to have to report a rare failure by Gerbe.

Gerbe Men Satin 8 Tights

Gerbe Men’s Satin 8 Tights are great for men!

Tights for men are not something you see every day, indeed this is only the sixth fashion style that we have ever seen and three of those were unisex styles from Levee who went into administration last week. There are of course non-fashion tights for men but nothing close to 8 denier.

There are four sizes covering heights and weights. From a weedy 5’2” and 132lbs (158cm 60kg) to a rather scary 6’7” and 242lbs (200cm 110kg). Our test pair arrived in XL so time for our webmaster to do more than just technical stuff!

As with the other Gerbe styles for men, the brief is heavier than the legs but unlike the others. It is still quite sheer (around 25-30 denier), and there is a single seam at the back rather than two with a panel in between. At the front, there are two seams either side of a triangular panel that provides the “pouch” that only men require, and in this panel is an opening for those bathroom moments.

The legs are super sheer and have the look of high-quality hosiery of the type that a lady would wear to a high-class evening event. Perfect even colour, a slight sheen to the finish.

The matt finish brief fits perfectly on the male form and is comfortable to wear. Sizing is spot on.

Just one question troubles us…just when would a man need eight denier sheer tights? Particularly in the black as we tested them. The Muscat shade you could wear with shorts, but they look wrong unless you have hairless legs. £21.50 is a sensible price for what is a high-quality garment but not if you are going to keep it covered up.

Comfort may be one answer; they feel so comfortable that you can forget that you have them on. Does a man need a better reason?

Gerbe Gardenia Tights

Gerbe Gardenia Tights are classics!

We have another from the Gerbe 2004 fashion collection.

Indeed, one of the more extreme designs, based on 15 denier sheer to waist tights with all the usual high quality features you would expect from Gerbe. Flat body seams with just the narrowest of reinforced bands either side. A cotton lined gusset, and of course the excellent Gerbe waistband.

Somebody then had the idea of adding a pattern dots all over, and a floral motif on the left ankle. Classy evening hosiery needs a backseam of course…and a seam needs reinforced heels.

When you could see a pattern emerging, they went for a sandal toe rather than a reinforced toe, but they did run the seam under the foot. Perhaps the “heel designer” felt thwarted by the lack of reinforced toe, so they added one more unique twist, the Gerbe name on the back of the heel.

So apparently they did not adhere to the “more is less” theory of design.

The fit is excellent, and these tights are very comfortable. The styling looks far less extreme once you have them on. The diamond shaped dots look good on the front of the leg, and the seam on the back sits perfectly straight, helped by running the seam to the waist and having the heel detail. The Gerbe names on the heels are quite discrete, the flower above the left ankle was perhaps the only detail that went too far. Certainly, very eye-catching with a cocktail dress, and you can be pretty confident you will be the only lady wearing a pair. Just take note of the red detailing, particularly on the black coloured pairs, introduce another colour to your outfit at your peril.
