Fogal Calais Tights

Fogal Calais Tights are amazing!

These tights are made of the ten denier 40% yarn that Fogal describe as their Catwalk yarn, so these are a variation on Fogal Brilliance Tights.

The graphics on the packet lead us to expect these to be a boxer brief styled version of the product. But what we found on opening the packet was a huge surprise, a huge surprise in the form of a lace waistband fully 5” (12.5 cm) deep on what are otherwise sheer to waist, or at least sheer to hip, tights. The seams in the panty are perfectly flat, and there is a lined gusset.

The sheer legs are also full of surprises in that they feel almost like 100% nylon non-stretch stockings despite being 40% Lycra. The legs are shaped at the heel and have a lightly reinforced toe detail.

Fogal sizing is as we have explained previously unique in that they have sizes from S to X/XL with the basic M or L size defining the height and the additional X or XX providing extra room in the hips. We know that tights sizing is not simply a matter of volume as some would have you believe, shape and proportion matter too and Fogal agrees with us.

Only once you have these tights on can you see just how they are made At gusset level there is a slight change in the knit, you can’t call this a panty as it is only 3” deep, more of a transition to the lace top. The lace top is designed to sit around and just over your hips rather than your waist.

The Catwalk yarn may be 40% Lycra, but it does not stretch easily. Fortunately, it feels incredibly durable, so unless you snag it, you should not get a ladder. Take the trouble to stretch evenly over your legs, and you get a perfect second skin fit.

The lace hip band didn’t work for us, sizing is not overly generous, and in any event, the style only suits girls who have little or no bottom. We cannot fault Fogal sizing, and you really should get the XL size if the standard M or L is not sized to fit your hips.

Fogal Brilliance Tights

Fogal Brilliance Tights are absolutely brilliant!

Students of hosiery and regular readers of our reviews will know that 85% nylon and 15% Lycra is the standard fibre composition for a huge proportion of modern Italian made hosiery at pretty much every price point, and other makers in many other countries have settled on a similar composition for their sheer tights. Here we had sheer tights from a Swiss brand but made in Italy, so they are very much in the sheer premium category.

Sheer to waist with T-band reinforcement in the panty Fogal Brilliance tights also features flat seams, a lined gusset and of course the signature Fogal waistband. The legs are shaped at the heel and finished with a lightly reinforced toe. Fogal waistband aside pretty standard detailing from Spain to Poland and Germany to Italy.

Being Fogal, of course, the quality of the fibre is excellent although perhaps the craft is not quite up with their Swiss made hosiery.

No size chart on the packet but the full range of S/M/L/XL is available. Your retailer will direct you to the right size.

Regular travellers to Europe will know that the Swiss are not a tall people and so Fogal tights can sometimes be a little short; perhaps as a result of being made in Italy this style is more generous for length.

The look on the leg is flawless, perfect even colour and a beautiful sheen to the finish. Smooth to the touch and comfortable too, these are without doubt very good tights indeed.

“Very good” but not sublime, they are very good like quite a few other £8-£12 pairs of tights that have been very good. But these are Fogal tights at £25; we expect something along the lines of sublime not very good.

Not sure how to conclude this review, Fogal is a class apart right up with Wolford, and everyone should buy and wear a pair of their tights at least once, but perhaps not this style. Read our other reviews and pick a more sheer style made in Switzerland.

As the day and evening wore on I almost forgot I had these tights on, they never moved all day and proved to be among the most comfortable tights I have worn. A little body warmth and time seemed to soften the material too; I found myself repeatedly stroking my leg to check how soft. Being 20 denier was a plus also, not a sign of distress from a busy day around home and office.

Still a little pricey for regular wear but a great treat.

Fogal Annabelle Dots Tights

Fogal Annabelle Dots Tights are a great bargain!

It is easy to spend hours of time and vast reserves of energy trying to come up with a new design, still longer to come up with a new design that works, but sometimes the answer is to revisit an old design. Here the designer quotes 1920s stockings as inspiration.

Tights with a regular pattern of spots is a design as old as modern sheer hosiery; I would not be surprised to hear that Mary Quant came up with tights styled this way in the 1960s.

Of course, way back tights were not made this way, with Lycra for fit, a broad range of sizes, flat seams, cotton lined gusset etc. And what makes this design work is Fogal’s attention to detail (even the T-band reinforcement around the panty seams carries the spot design) and their excellent quality of manufacture.

When a lot of winter season hosiery is opaque, it is nice to see a sheer style, only the colour palette hinting at the time of year. Our test pair in ‘cypres’ (which is a shade of green) seems to blend with all other natural shades of green and brown without flaunting its ‘green-ness’.

So we love the design, and we love the quality; so what about fit and feel?

Well, sizing is accurate and thanks to the Lycra and quality fibre you can stretch up a longer leg if required. The fit is great thanks again to the Lycra and the shaping provided at the heel.

Lovely to wear, but not to the same level as Fogal sheers…simply good rather than sublime. We have a sneaking suspicion that this design is manufactured in Italy rather than Switzerland.

In an era when high street brands are charging £12-15 for fashion tights, £21 for Fogal is almost a bargain.

Fogal All Nude Tights

Fogal All Nude Tights have the potential for greatness!

We feel that we should start all reviews of Fogal tights with a financial health warning. They are far from cheap but past our experience is that hosiery of this quality can be addictive.

All Nude is one of several sheer and ultra sheer styles made by Fogal; their definition of ultra sheer being under ten denier. Each style has particular design features for specific circumstances so you should read the reviews of the other styles too.

All Nude is a sheer to waist style with T-band detailing, that is to say, there is a narrow reinforced area either side of the flat seams in the panty that extends to become a finger band to give a strong transition to the waistband. The panty also features a cotton lined gusset.

The legs have some shaping at the heel, and the toes are genuine un-reinforced sandal toes. The unique feature of this style within the Fogal range of sheers is that the area under the ball of your foot is lightly reinforced and has discrete silicone lines to grip your footwear. If you are looking for sheer tights to wear with mules or light sandals this style is designed with you in mind.

If you are after the classic “is she? Isn’t she?” bare legged look All Nude from Fogal lives up to its name, you can feel you are wearing tights, but it would take a keen eye to see. The fit is like a second skin, and the high Lycra content in the yarn makes for generous sizing too. Fogal size by a combination of height and weight like most manufacturers but unusually they offer two hip sizes for a single height range, e.g. L for 5’6”-5’11” with 40”-46” hips and XL for the same height range but with 45”-54” hips. Certainly, our test pair easily accommodated the hip combined with what are long legs for someone of 5’11”. For taller girls for whom Fogal are sometimes a little short, this would be the first size to try.

The silicone under the foot works and unlike with similar ideas from other makers you are not aware of the silicone under your foot.

Very good but are they worth £24.50? I think we have to say no unless they prove to be ultra-durable. The look and feel on are great, but there is nothing about this design that shouts that they are expensive tights from Switzerland, perhaps because they are made in Italy.

Buy then if you can afford them, but you can get the same look for less.

Fiore Valeria Tights

Fiore Valeria Tights are delicious!

Fiore is continually coming up with new and exciting designs; here they have produced a new slant on the concept of back seamed hosiery by adding a rope-inspired design down the back of a 20 denier sheer tight. As part of the design, they have incorporated metallic yarn (Lurex to give the more familiar brand name).

The size chart suggests there are five sizes but the detailing description only covers sizes 2, 3 & 4. Size 2 has a simple seam in the panty, sizes 3 & 4 have a gusset. There is a T-band detailing in all the sizes.

Seam detail aside these are basic sheer to waist tights knitted with a lightly reinforced toe, straight legs and flat seams in the panty. As sheer tights, they work well with even colour density and a subtle sheen on the finish. Smooth to the touch but not soft.

Our test pair came in size 3, slightly small for our model, but there was plenty of stretch and strength to tease out extra length. Fiore provides sizing based on height, weight and hip measurement…as with other Polish brands we recommend using hip size first and then height when choosing a size. Use weight only if you have very heavy legs.

So what of the design? Well, it runs from toe to the top of the leg, and it ran straight as soon the tights were put on. The contrast and black and silver are very eye-catching and cool. It’s also slimming too.

Altogether great tights that look expensive on your legs. Whether they are costly depends on where you live; in Europe they are cheap, but if you are in the USA or Canada you might find taxes and transport costs make them pricier… still worth a try.

Fiore Talisa Tights

Fiore Talisa Tights are guaranteed to make you the life of the party!

Fiore continues to come up with designs putting a new slant on the classic sheer, Fiore Talisa tights sport a bold stripe down the outside of each leg…and sport is the right word as sportswear is the inspiration behind the design.

The basic tights are sheer to waist with flat seams, T-band reinforcement and a cotton lined gusset (sizes 3&4). The legs are unshaped, no doubt to facilitate the inclusion of the stripe detail and finished with a lightly reinforced toe.

The size chart defines five sizes, but we suspect only sizes 2-4 are made, these are intended to cover a range of heights and weights from 152-182 cm and 50-90kg. Usefully Fiore also includes guidance on hip measurement. The sizing is spot on, but if you are at the top end of a size guide, you may need a little patience to get all the necessary stretch.

We love the “go-faster” stripe, but you need to take care to get it perfectly straight, if you fail first time roll down to the ankle and start again, don’t twist. This stripe that is repeated up and down also helps to get the most out of the stretch available if you are tall.

The fit is excellent from hip to toe.

Once on the reinforced toe is hardly visible, but we still would not recommend wearing with open shoes. The side stripe goes from just behind the toe to the top of the thigh, pair with fashions that hide both ends for optimum effect. The design works very well, and that is mainly because these are quality sheer matt tights to start with; other fashion tights makers take note.

An absolute steal at a price, perfect for parties.

Fiore Raula Tights

Fiore Raula Tights are trendy and inexpensive!

These tights come from Fiore’s Elite collection that up to now has been very impressive. This particular offering is a glossy 40 denier style which comes in a variety of colours; in the case of our test sample plum.

The packaging is high quality, and we love the styling in the photograph, very classy indeed.

By no stretch of the imagination are these lightweight tights you can feel every one of the forty deniers in the weight, but what you also feel is an excellent smoothness and softness.

The styling of the leg is very straightforward just a straight leg with a basic plain reinforced toe detail. Overall the styling is sheer to waist with flat seams in the panty, and a cotton lined gusset in the midrange sizes. Fiore has used the T-band styling that we have seen on many of their tights, that is a reinforced area either side of the body seam and around the gusset that merges in with a finger band, all designed to aid durability. A nice touch is a Fiore motif in the finger band on each hip. The waistband is a two-stage design with a deep transition (2.5cm) from the finger band to the shallow waistband proper (1.2cm).

Sizing is accurate, but we found that the panty was quite short so that you get more of a hipster fit; no bad thing but something to be aware of if you like your tights comfortably up on your waist.

There were a few very slight flaws in our test pair that meant the colour was not entirely even which was a pity as otherwise, the high gloss finish was visually stunning.

Not the best that we have seen from Fiore but at £2.99 still good value.

Fiore Passion Suspender Fishnet Tights

Fiore Passion Suspender Fishnet Tights are so good!

Of our 100 plus reviews today only about ten have been fishnets, something of a surprise as they are very much in fashion at present.

Suspender tights have also been something of a rarity with only about six pairs reviewed.

As far as we can recall these are the first fishnet suspender tights we have seen.

With today being the hottest day of the year so far in England we had no trouble finding a tester for what should be cool and airy tights.

Fiore makes this style in sizes 2-4 only and our size four pair looked tiny.

Opening them out revealed a very shallow waistband of good quality and four suspender straps with a pretty lace edging. The straight legs are finished with a simple toe seam.

Putting suspender tights on can be a challenge but in this case well worth the effort. The high Lycra content gives lots of stretches and a great fit. The waistband sat perfectly on our model’s waist.  So long as your hips and waist are under 42” you should get these tights on without difficulty, the legs stretch easily to suit all typical lengths of the leg.

As cool and comfortable as we had hoped these tights feel as good as they look, and that is pretty good. Among the best suspender tights and best fishnets, we have tried, certainly something to get in your wardrobe for the summer.

If we have a criticism, it is that they are only available (via ‘UK Tights‘) in black and white. A natural shade would be just the thing for summer.

Fiore Palome Tights

Fiore Palome Tights are a little underwhelming.

We were delighted when the UK importer of Fiore tights and stockings got back in touch with the offer of a new range to review; Fiore has consistently provided high quality and fantastic value for money.

Fiore Palome Tights are from the “Elite” range that we have not seen previously.

The packet as ever has a comprehensive description both in words and in graphics together with a size chart detailing the five sizes in the Fiore range.

First impressions are excellent; these are light, soft sheer to waist tights that feel sheerer than we would expect from 20 denier. The detailing is good with flat seams in the panty and the T-bar reinforced area either side of the seams and forming a transition between sheer panty and waistband. The finger band part of the T carries the Fiore motif on each hip. The waistband is unusual as it is made up of a very narrow right waistband (1cm deep) and a thicker transition band. The legs are straight and finished with a reinforced toe.

Sizing initially seemed a little on the small side, but there is plenty of stretches if you take care to put these tights on in line with best practice. If they don’t quite fit then start again all the way from your toes stretching as you go, don’t pull. Your reward for patience is a fantastic fit like a second skin. Sizing is accurate but not generous, and if you are between sizes, we suggest you go up one size.

At 20 denier these tights are just a little heavy to disappear entirely, but the look is more like a 12-15 denier. The reinforced toe is indistinguishable from the rest of the leg once on. The sheen is eye-catching but a subtle satin-like look rather than a gloss look. Colour is perfectly even.

In our opinion, these tights are underpriced by at least £1. Brand quality at not much more than supermarket prices.

Fiore Nicole Tights

Fiore Nicole Tights really show off your legs!

We had a few worries about the sizing of these tights, the chart on the packet suggested a size smaller than what we had chosen by referring to the usual size charts. These tights are made in three sizes: size two without gusset and sizes 3 and 4 with a cotton lined gusset.

The “feature” of these tights is that they combine the look of fashion leggings with fit and comfort of tights with a foot.

Unfolding them, you can see that there is no shaping in the leg nor at the heel. The brief section is topped with a 2,5 cm deep finger band with the Fiore-motif and a 4 cm deep waistband. Brief-seams are flat. The legs are finished with nearly invisible reinforcement at the toes, suitable for wear with open toe shoes.

Once on your legs, these tights do look like leggings, and they have a striking flowery pattern going from the ankle up to the finger band. The “leggings” part feels a little coarse on the outside but the look and feel on the legs leaves nothing to complain about.

In complete contrast, the ankle and foot section is smooth and sheer and shiny.

Overall the length and other fit are perfect, so the standard sizing is accurate. While the look is like leggings the comfort is much better, the foot holds the “cuff” in place, and because of this there is no need for elastic there, so you don’t get a ring around your leg. Having your foot covered makes shoes far more comfortable.

These tights look great with high-heels and a very short skirt. So go and buy them if you’re brave enough to show off your legs! They are a bargain for the price.
