Legwear Fashion Trends for Autumn 2007

We have been a little confused this season as the hot looks on the catwalks have contained some exciting legwear, mostly opaque , but the “style gurus” on certain UK TV shows have continued to play down hosiery.

Our partners and readers tell us hosiery is the thing for the Autumn/Winter season, and it seems at least one designer at the New York fashion week agrees

By SAMANTHA CRITCHELL – 9 September 2007. NEW YORK (AP) — Sometimes what you don't see is the sexiest thing at a fashion show. Derek Lam unveiled his spring collection Sunday at a cavernous space near the Hudson River with models wearing black pantyhose with seams down the back.

It's probably the first time pantyhose — not tights — have been on a New York Fashion Week runway in years. But the dark covered leg added a bit of sultry mystery to all the satin, siren like looks.”

We decided to carry out some research of our own, not with a clipboard but with a camera. Thank you to the ladies of Manchester for being our survey subjects.

We did of course see many women in jeans, but in the course of just an hour or so in one square in Manchester we saw a great variety of hosiery style and very few bare legs.

A very popular combination, particularly with the younger women was sheer hosiery with a denim skirt.

Styles of skirts varied from the smartly tailored to the slightly tatty but lengths were always short short and the hosiery colour of choice is best described as “nude”.

We picked just three of the young ladies from many to demonstrate this look, but there was many more from mid teens to mid twenties going with the same look.




		The only criticism we would have is that on the whole the quality of hosiery they were wearing was not great. But they were wearing sheer hosiery to do just the job it is designed for. Giving a leg that the smooth even look of perfect skin, and just enough insulation to ward off the goose bumps.

The denim mini was also paired to good effect with both gloss and matt finish opaque tights.

The colours available in opaque hosiery this season are tremendously varied and we would have liked to have seen a few more ladies being just a little more adventurous in their choice of clothes to go with the opaque tights.

The pump style shoes were a common feature of many outfits, we expect that these will give way to boots as the weather gets cooler.

Both classic knee boots and more adventurous styles work well, giving option for women of all ages.

If we had been giving prizes for the most stylish outfit with opaque tights it would have gone to this lady in her tailored shorts. All in shades of brown she looked stunning.

The denim skirt also works very well with fishnet tights and boots.

Fishnet hosiery was a popular choice with many younger women and teenagers, either as part of an everyday outfit or a “lifestyle look”. Mancunians will be familiar with the teenagers who gather near the Urbis museum on the weekend and a few of the older girls allowed us to photograph their outfits.

And just to show that fishnets don’t have to be black, and they don’t have to go with a short skirt.

A feminine and stylish look for a woman of any age.

Some ladies managed to really stand out from the crowd. We particularly liked the way that this lady picked out a colour from her skirt for her hosiery.


	And just to prove that you don’t have to wear a denim miniskirt here are a few more eye catching looks.

We particularly liked the combination of suede skirt with pale tan tights. Special mention must go to this lady for wearing the best quality sheer tights seen during our short photo survey.

Gloss finish was a nice change from matt.


	And finally proof that not everyone wears flat shoes. Great to see some high heels, although white is perhaps not the best colour.
